Cooking chicken wings with a recipe.
Today we are making barbecue spicy garlic chicken with a recipe. They will be compared to wings made two weeks ago without a recipe and measurements. The ingredients necessary for today are 4-5 pounds chicken wings, broken down into wingettes and drumettes, 3 tablespoons light olive oil, 1 cup Old Bay Seasoning, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon sugar, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1/2 teaspoon barbecue sauce. The purpose of the exercise is to compare the taste, and flavor of the wings without using a recipe to those using the recipe.
The technical part of this recipe is the time and as well the ,measurements of the food. After seasoning the chicken you will preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and place the chicken in the oven for 20-30 minutes checking routinely. At the halfway point I will add the barbecue sauce and leave it to cook for about 15-20 minutes.
I stared cooking at 12:15 pm and ended at 1:25 pm. Cooking with the recipe took more than an hour.
After tasting the chicken I preferred the chicken without the recipe because I had less restrictions in preparing and mixing and I feel the chicken prepared without the recipe tasted better. When cooking with a recipe it is easier for new learners because it gives them a guideline to follow.However, with cooking without a recipe a learner has the freedom to develop their own ideas and and inputs and only need to be provided guidance. In other words, the teacher will act as a facilitator in this case to guide the learner in achieving his or her goal.

Here are some examples of what I got from your post about learning. As a learner, particularly an adult learner I don't like prescriptive learning. How can I take assignments that have a specific end goal (like this one - learn about learning) and let students create their own path for that learning? (give choice about their topics, provide set check in times to see about progress/learning, provide facilitation along the way at these check in times). How do I provide needed scaffolding and support in that individualized learning activity to keep the learning going? (in this case I provide bi-monthly feedback and ongoing reflections to point you in the direction to keep learning going). What do I as an educator need to do if student's are off track? (perhaps we need to have a 1:1 zoom to discuss how to proceed with this project)?
